Sunday Thoughts

The past two weeks have been so eventful. Here are some of the thoughts and themes I've picked up.

I love what I do!
What a privilege to share what I believe with people. I am always awestruck when people share how their lives have been changed. I know how empty my words are on their own, so it can only be God moving inside them. Maybe I'll blog more about this another time.

I love my friends!
I'm so thankful for friends: old friends I've grown up with, new friends I never expected I'd become close to, friends who correct me and speak the truth to me, friends who expand my world, friends I learn from, friends I see everyday, friends I see every week, friends I see on occasion, and friends I miss. Relationships enrich life.

What a great leadership team!
I'm so amazed by the men who lead our organization. I've known them ever since I was a little boy, but now that I get to work with them I'm just blown away by their wisdom and experience. I could go on and on about the things I've learned...

Lessons From the First Week

Last week was the start of our School of Campus Ministry. We have 31 students from all over the Philippines, from as far north as Tuguegarao all the way to Zamboanga. All of them have come to be trained to be campus missionaries and youth pastors.

It's my first time to "run a school," and I must say it's a pretty fun experience. Here are some thoughts and lessons from the first week:

Imagine the class from your student's perspective.
One of my natural advantages in preparing for this thing is I'm easily bored. I've sat through enough lectures, classes, speeches, talks, and sermons that have proven this to be true. I always carry a book for insurance. This being the case, I always imagine myself in the class as I write the curriculum. If I find myself getting bored, I modify it immediately.

Proper preparation prevents poor performance.
I learned this nifty (naks! "NIFTY!") alliteration from a friend in the US. It really makes a difference. So always prepare well. You'll feel the differ...

My Favorite Campus Harvest Moments

This is kinda late, but I've been working on our School of Campus Ministry lately, so I could only finish this blog now.

Campus Harvest is our yearly (or every-other-yearly?) conference. Except for last year, we've had one every year since 2003. Click here for pictures and free podcasts of the messages. While I really enjoyed all the others, this one was the best one ever in my books.

Here are some reasons why:

1. Teamwork
It was so energizing to work with such an excellent team! People who worked with so much commitment, passion, and skill. It is impossible to thank everyone who worked on it here, but none of it would have worked without them.

Even the messages were done with teamwork. I couldn't have preached my message without the excellent support from the technical and production team.

It was funny comparing notes with the other speakers, how all of us had HUGE inputs from other people in preparing our messages. We are always better together than alone.

2.
Bill Hybels and Ironman

I had two amazing experiences today.

Both very different from the other, but with one common intersection.

From 9-5, I was at a Question and Answer session with Pastors Bill Hybels and Wayne Cordeiro. It was attended by a bunch of pastors from Victory and elsewhere. What an amazing time! If ideas are brain food, this was the mental equivalent of a buffet at Circles!

One part that stuck out to me was when Pastor Bill talked about how he made the decision to pursue his life's calling, how he decided to follow Jesus in this specific way. He then said his life was so much richer in every way for it, and that he was so glad he made that decision.

He also said that sometimes he would imagine what his life would be like if he had chosen something else. And it was a haunting picture. He was so glad for his decision and he was sure that it was right.

At 730 pm, I watched Iron...

Skeet Shooting in Dallas

These Texans are amazing! The first thing they invited me to was skeet shooting at a range. You shoot these small round clay things called clay pigeons. They're named that because they're meant to fly in the same way as birds.

I had some great companions. There was Jimmy - a small group leader from Trinity Dallas Church, Pastor Eric Soon - runner, executive pastor, shooter, and the best food connoisseur in Dallas, Stephen Keilers - my host, who has a plan to come to Manila and study missions one day, and his dad, Gerald - the 6'7" giant who served in Vietnam, whose big size is matched by a big heart.

It was fun, except for the recoil of the gun! It kicked like crazy!!! Imagine someone kicking you in the shoulder repeatedly. I was bruised for a few days afterwards. But it was so worth it! I hit around 60% of my 50 shots, pretty good for a first time!

The song is Brad Paisley's I'm Still a Guy. It's my new favorite country song. (Meaning, it's the only one I listen to. Hahaha) ...

Laughable Joe

I missed my flight! Hahahaha!!! I had the wrong time in my head this whole morning. I thought it was at 2:45. There I was leisurely packing, listening to music, dropping by Walmart and the post office.. then when I went to check in online, it said my flight had left already at 10:45. Whoops!!!

Fortunately, they rebooked it for free. Thanks Varsha for helping me get a really cool ticket. I've changed my flights twice and now rebooked a missed one all FREE OF CHARGE. So it was definitely worth the price.

Anyway, that's another hilarious episode to add to my travel comedies. As I thought about it, here are a few more:

1. The night before I flew out here, I totally forgot that I didn't have my passport. It was still at the Japanese Embassy. I was flying out in 8 hours and my passport was in limbo! Hahaha! I had to move my flight one day later and MAKE SURE that I had my passport the next day.

2. Coming home from San Jose last year, Tracy offered to drop me off at the airport. I moved my ba...

Good Food, Good Friends, Good Times

Here are some of the meals I've had during my trip. I love enjoying different cuisines so it was really great being able to do that this trip. I loved all the variety: Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Persian, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Southern, Texan, Mexican, Hawaiian, and of course, Filipino!

The Numbers

I'm almost home! This was the 2nd longest trip I've ever taken. It has been a GRREAT trip full of learning, doing, connecting and reconnecting.

Since there's so much to blog about, and my mind can't crunch everything down to a "bloggable level." I'll summarize this trip in the most impersonal way I can.

Away for 92 days

    Visited 9 cities

Slept 37 nights on beds, 49 nights on sofas, and 5 nights on sofa beds (which are a category on their own because of their unique discomfort)

Drove over 2000 miles, for an estimated 50 hours in the car

Rented 4 cars, borrowed 3 cars

Took 11 plane rides and 4 bus rides

Now that I look at it this way, it doesn't seem that long anymore. I mean, it sure felt longer than it looks. I guess numbers have a way of doing that, cutting through feelings and bringing us back to reality. So the most significant numbers to me right now a...

Reading List #2

I'm really behind on this. I was hoping to blog what I'd been reading per month, but things have been really busy. The first version of this can be found here. And these are the books I've read since then. There's quite a lot this time because it's been two and a half months, and I had to read a lot for the school I attended.

1. The Life You've Always Wanted
This is a book about developing spiritual disciplines like praying, reading the Bible, etc. I loved it because it approached the topic from a very liberating perspective. Instead of coming away feeling like there's SO MUCH I have to do, the book made me want to do those things. You'll have to read it to know what I mean, but it's definitely worth it. The language is light but the ideas are great. This is something for anyone who wants to mature spiritually. A great book!

2.
When is Good Enough Enough?

"Enough" is such a strange word. Stare at it and say it out loud. I don't know if you're like me, but doing that eventually makes the word look so strange and lose its meaning. Try it here: enough enough enough enough enough enough... Does it happen to you too?
On Power a.k.a. Why I Didn't Really Like 300 *SPOILER*

*This blog is a little long. But I hope the colors and layouts help. I've been thinking about this ever since I saw the movie last year, but couldn't put my thoughts and feelings into words till now. Writing this was very emotionally moving for me, and I hope it benefits you too.*

First of all, I really enjoyed the movie. I had been anticipating it for quite a while, AND it came out on my birthday last year! I loved the action, the violence, the gore, all of that. The creativity was really good too. So I'm not saying that I hated the movie, okay?

I loved all the bravery, the courage, strength, and ability. I loved how they laughed under the shower of arrows. It was thrilling to watch them fight with the knowledge that they could be killed any moment. These were men willing to fight, suffer, and die.

But fight, suffer and die for what? The Spartans fought for no one else but themselves. They killed their babies when they saw the slightest imperfection in them. The scene wi...

UPDATED: Just So I Know You Know

One of the billions of things I can't understand about women is when they say that they don't want you to fix their problems right away. It means more to them that you listen as they talk. I never could get that because I'm more in the category that says, "Help me, give me advice, or let me do it alone. We can socialize later." Those who have attempted to educate me say that "Just knowing that you know about the problem and are with me in it is enough."

I think I understood a bit of that today. It's 9:30 am as I type this. I'm in the Memphis airport, getting a connecting flight from Nashville to LA. Nashville was a blast, I honestly never expected to enjoy myself that much there. The people were just amazing, and I felt so at home. But that's for another blog.

When I arrived here, I found that my Northwest flight to LA was delayed and I would consequently miss my Delta flight to San Jose. Neither airline said they could/would help me because the flights were booked separately. Each o...

Pastor Ryan Getting Back at Elijah

For Easter Sunday, we had a Piñata (kinda like Palayok, to the Filipinos). After his turn, Ryan immediately found a way to mess with the other people who were trying to hit it. Hahahaha!

Pastor Ryan Tan and the Dog

We were hanging out at Pastor Paul Barker's house. Ryan stood up to get a video and we hid the dog underneath the blanket at his spot. I love his reaction! Listen to hear Elijah say, "It's a ninja move!" And at the end Ryan says, "I almost bit the dog with my Crouching Tiger."

Holy Week in Nashville

I was kinda missing the whole Holy Week experience in Manila. You know, the sudden surge of religiosity in an already religious nation, the ghost-town feel, and the pleasure of driving through relatively empty streets.

But this past week has been a blast as well! We had great classes. Then I got to hang out with Pinoys: Pam and her coworkers and Coocoo. I also got to play basketball and we hung out a lot with our classmates.

Weekend in St. Louis

I drove up to St. Louis last Friday to spend the weekend with some friends there.

BITIN!!! But it was great seeing them again. I stayed with the Broadduses: Bill and Cathy with their 3 kids, Lita(13), Victoria(6), and Dillon (2). It was fun playing with the kids, monopoly, hide-and-seek, Wii, tag, Deal or No deal, and their new acquisition, the trampoline!!!

I also got to see Ben and Benjamin Stratton after church. I stayed with the Strattons before, and Benjamin and I played tons of Xbox games together. Hahaha! Didn't have the time to do that this trip, maybe next time.

Ben showed me around his new cafe. I can't wait to visit again when it's up and

"I Am Doing A Great Work and I Cannot Come Down."

This past weekend, I drove up to St. Louis to visit some friends. You can check out some pics here. It really amazes me how a seemingly-random encounter has become a friendship that's been going for almost 4 years now.

Anyway, on the way home I was listening to Andy Stanley's podcast and I was struck by something he said. He was talking about knowing God's will for your life, like how do we figure out what the best decision is. One way to determine it is to receive a vision from God about your future. The more detailed our vision is, the less distracted we will be and the easier it will be to decide.

For example, if you have a vision that you will be healthy enough to run around with your grandchildren when you're over 50 years old, then that vision should automatically eliminate certain lifestyles. We wouldn't eat certain things, we'd exercise more, etc.

He gave the example of Nehemiah, who was tasked to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. While he was doing this, in chapter 6, a group ...

Things I'm Excited For

Great, great things ahead! I'm so excited for so many new developments this year! Last night, I couldn't sleep coz I was thinking of so many things that we've got coming up and it was keeping me awake. Campus Harvest is our student conference where young people come together to worship God, get to know people with a similar passion, and learn how to live for God, especially in their homes, schools, and communities.

It's gonna go from May 22-24 at the PhilSports Arena (which we all know as ULTRA, but it isn't called that anymore.) This one's gonna be GREAT! I love the theme and I'm excited for the ideas that have been coming up. If you plan on going, you better sign up soon to get good seats. You can register here. There's a video on that site already.
The Trip So Far - North Carolina

I’m home from Durham, North Carolina now having just attended Campus Harvest and the Every Nation Campus Ministries Staff Summit. Pastors LA, Marc, Ryan, and I drove down here from Nashville last Friday. It’s a 9 hour drive and Pastor Marc heroically volunteered to drive the whole time.

Just like last year, these meetings and talks have been so great! There’s too many thoughts flying around so I’ll do the random points thing again.

So many great ideas!
I'm really grateful for this opportunity to learn and observe their campus ministries here. I'm learning so much from how well-organized things are. It's a really interesting exercise to be observing things outside of your own culture and thinking about what would and wouldn't work back home. I can't wait to go home and put some of these things to practice.

So much fun connecting with people!
I realize now that I love making first-time connections and meeting different kinds of people.
