If I could give it 6 stars, I would. I'd give 10 stars even! This movie is amazing!!!
DEEP REVIEW: I felt like the movie really achieved something rare by successfully remaining faithful to the ethos of the original cartoon and comic strips from the 80s while adapting it to modern times. Something is almost always lost in many of these adaptations, whether book, cartoon, or comic strip to film. Either they lose their original theme or fail to to connect to the present. Transformers, amazingly, maintained both.
It was definitely a modern movie. JA tells me that it took 38 hours to render a single frame of some of the shots. (He also added that there are 24 frames in a second of footage to give me perspective. So following that premise. A single second of a shot that complex would have taken 38 days to render.) The lines of reality and CGI are blurred so well. Which is incredible considering that you're watching HUGE robots transform and fight it each other.
But it was also very faithful to the original spirit of the Transformers franchise.* They stayed true to the nature of their main characters, their relationship to one another, and the plot of the entire movie.
The whole misunderstanding of the government and army with the Autobots is from the cartoon. The strained relationship of Starscream and Megatron, where Starscream always attempts to please Megatron and fails, is featured also. Even the slightly cheesy, but inspiring lines of Optimus Prime made it. "One shall stand and one shall fall."
There's so much more about the movie that was faithful to the original, which is why it will be a pleasurable watch for a fan of the cartoons. Very few movies have made a bridge between the past and the present as effectively as this has.
SHALLOW REVIEW: Guys, it's really simple: Nice cars, Car chases, Huge robots! Huge robots transforming and fighting! Gun fights! Dog fights! Big explosions! Intense music. Awesome graphics and effects. A cute girl. What more could you ask for?
I love the part where you see Optimus Prime drive in and the light reflects off of his bumper. You almost feel like a kid again! Hahaha! Go see this movie!
*FOOTNOTE: One example of a film that failed in this was the Mission Impossible trilogy with Tom Cruise. It made for a pretty good action flick, true, but it was nothing like the Mission Impossible in the TV series. They ruined that in the first movie when they made Mister Phelps a bad guy. They completely changed the plot line for one of their main characters, then they proceeded to dismantle the entire IM team.
 | hrrr... aywanatowatchitnow! why isn't it showing here in this side of the ocean where the film was supposedly made?! being half an hour away from tinseltown isn't doing me any favors.
you guys just made my anticipation for transformers skyrocket some more. hehe |
 | oiblay wrote on Jun 28, '07, edited on Jun 28, '07 Absolutely brilliant news! I can't wait!!! Optimus Prime is like the most awesome role model... in my book, he's up there with Pastor Steve and your dad! Siguradong born-again yan, pare! |

 | AWE-some! made me feel 9 again. |
 | i've seen it twice! at a premeire(tama spelling?) and opening day with my family. SPECTACULAR INDEED. good script too, not a movie of shallow one liners this genre is known for. it's an entertainment marvel. amazing how these robots even have good "pick up" techniques too. |
 | wohooo!!! excited na ako!!!!
|
 | it's that good Joe? so 5 stars right up there with Casablanca the first two Godfather movies? Ok... I'll see it tonight based on your review...!! HAHA!! (How's the plot and screenplay? Or is it another eye candy/brains not required classic!) |

 | anubz wrote on Jun 29, '07 joe! watched transformers yesterday, astig yung movie, sobrang ganda, mind blowing scenes. i would like to give it a 10 but im inclined to give it a...umm....9.721, hehehe (labo). di ko kasi trip yung look ni megatron, i prefer the cartoon version. astig din voice ni optimus prime (reminds me of the voltron intro). |
 | I gotta watchit! Michael Bay did great on the adaptation...akala ko mediocre eh |
 | yeah i wouldn't mind watching it again and again and again... but wasn't bumblebee a volkswagon? but hey who cares? 'twas a great movie... it's my new best movie of the year. |
 | I saw it twice in a day (am & pm) with a 7hr rest in between! meron na bang pirated dibidi nito? tee hee hee
2 of my favorite decepticons... soundwave and devastator... they totally looked different =( |
 | i watched it again today and changed my position slightly. you can read about it here . i guess while watching it today, i was able to take the perspective of a person who didn't grow up with the series. that being said though, i watched it growing up. so i'm still hooked on it. labo... hehehe |
 | havent watched it!but will watch it!hir in malaysia!:) |
 | that was a great movie! will def watch it again and buy dvd. grabe! astig! galeng! the funny thing is, Michael Bay almost didn't take the job. he was not a fan. but after going to Hasbro, meeting the CEO, doing a course on Transformers, , and being told they transform at 80mph, he made his mind up in 3 secs. buti na lang!!! |
 | Watched it three times in two days... who knows...I MIGHT watch it again...hehehe |
 | nrdna wrote on Jul 3, '07 thanks for the insightful review(s)! may i link this to my site? (btw, you're right, the MI movie wasn't faithful to the orig. i don't like that it became a one-man show.) |
 | pwedeng magpa girl ako? I cried when Bumblebee got super bugbog.....waaaahhh! naiyak talaga ako dun!! sniff sniff..wala e.senti lang po. |
 | i think the reason why bumble bee was not a beetle was because all the autobots came from General Motors (GM), they probably made a good deal out of it. Camaro, pontiac, hummer, and the truck (prime) were all owned by GMC. Now, why is the beetle beside camaro? maybe, just to pay tribute that the original bumblebee was a beetle, and it transformed into vintage camaro. (just my opinion) |
 | its not my opinion anymore, its true. i visited GM site and you can see there on their front page optimus prime selling GM products, i hope optimus can be a good car dealer. hehehe

 | this movie didn't open in Japan yet. Japan is sooo late! |

Agree here. would have been blown away though had it come with an awesome soundtrack to match. It just did not have enough musical thump to punctuate the scenes. And I found the transformations rather too fast. You cant see which parts go where; which was a fascinating sight in the cartoon version. One slow-mo scene just to establish the accuracy of the transformations would have been great.
But over-all...i'd watch this over and over.
Blessings... |
 | This movie Rocks! But id like to see unicron on the big screen! |
